Women’s Basketball: Macalester Loses at Augsburg Despite Career Days for Three Scots

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophomore forward Cady Davis (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt), junior guard Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) and first year guard Megan Matthews (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) achieved career highs with 19, 18 and 14 points, respectively, as the Macalester College women's basketball team fell to Augsburg University on the road, 86-71 Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. The Scots are now 1-11 overall and 0-6 in conference games, while the Auggies improve to 5-8, 2-4 MIAC.

Early in the first quarter, Matthews tallied five points and junior guard Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) had four points to give Macalester the largest lead of the quarter, 9-5. After Augsburg came back to take a two-point lead, 14-12, a basket by Davis and four straight points from Daley put the Scots up 18-15 with 1:28 left in the quarter. A three-pointer from Lani Fonoti and a basket by Tyliah Frazier gave the Auggies a 20-18 edge heading into the second quarter.

Augsburg maintained the upper hand in the second quarter, using a 14-5 run to lead 34-23 at the 4:34 mark. A three from junior guard Kendall Bernbaum (Dallas, Texas/Shelton School) and two free throws by senior forward Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) brought Macalester to within eight, 36-28. But the Auggies closed out the quarter by outscoring the Scots 6-2 to take a 42-30 halftime lead. Macalester scored 11 points off of 12 Augsburg turnovers but the Auggies tallied 12 second-chance points with seven offensive rebounds in the half.

With the difference still 12 points, 49-37, Augsburg put the game out of reach with a 17-2 run in the third quarter to lead 66-39 with three minutes left in the quarter. The hosts ended up taking a 71-47 advantage into the final quarter after shooting 53.8 percent from the field while holding the Scots to 18.8 percent shooting in the third quarter. Macalester mounted an improbable comeback in the fourth, opening the quarter with a 15-5 run that saw first year guard Faith Accardo (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian), Daley and Smith each score four points to help reduce the deficit to 14, 76-58. But the Scots didn't get any closer, as the Auggies wrapped up the home win.

Davis tallied nine of her 19 points in the fourth quarter on 4-of-4 shooting to help Macalester shoot 47.8 percent over the final 10 minutes. Davis, whose previous career best was eight points against Carleton on Dec. 10, also added eight rebounds and four steals. Daley registered a career-high 18 points to go with five rebounds, five steals and two assists. Matthews hit both of her three-point attempts and went 6-of-10 from the free throw line to finish with 14 points and two steals. Saylor Gallagher led Augsburg with 16 points.

The Scots continue MIAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 14 with a game at St. Scholastica. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
