DULUTH, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team fell to the College of Saint Scholastica, 62-48 in a MIAC road game Wednesday night in Reif Gymnasium. The Scots, who outscored the Saints in the second half, are now 1-12 overall and 0-7 in the conference, while the Saints improve to 10-4, 5-2 MIAC.
St. Scholastica opened the game with a 17-6 run before senior forward
Ellie Corbett (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) made a three-pointer to make the score 17-9 with 1:40 left in the first quarter. First year guard
Megan Matthews (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) answered a Saints' basket with a three, as the hosts took a 19-12 lead after one quarter. Matthews started the second quarter with another three-pointer to bring the Scots to within four, 19-15. But an 11-1 run extended the St. Scholastica lead to 14, 30-16 at the 5:44 mark. With the lead still 14, 34-20 with four minutes left in the half, the Saints tallied five of the last seven points for a 39-22 halftime advantage.
St. Scholastica shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half while holding Macalester to 19.0 percent. The Scots crashed the glass for 16 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second-chance points.
In the third quarter, the Saints pushed their lead up to 20, 44-24, before Macalester reeled off a 9-2 run that included another three from Corbett and baskets by Matthews, sophomore guard
Emma Karlin (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) and junior guard
Mary Daley (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) that made the score 46-33 with 5:40 left in the period. Each team made a pair of threes to close out the quarter, with first year guard
Faith Accardo (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian) making both of Macalester's shots from deep to keep the difference at 13, 52-39 heading into the final quarter.
Evie Schmitz hit her fifth three of the game to open the fourth quarter. The lead was 17 when junior guard
Sydnee Smith (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) converted a conventional three-point play and Accardo scored to bring the Scots to within 12, 58-46 with 3:32 remaining. That's as close as Macalester would get, as St. Scholastica closed out the 62-48 win. The Scots ended up with a 50-38 rebounding advantage while committing a season-low 11 turnovers.
Corbett finished with a season-best 10 points to go with three rebounds and two steals. Smith contributed nine points, five boards and two steals, while Matthews had eight points and seven boards. Sophomore forward
Cady Davis (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt) led all players with a career-high 15 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. Schmitz scored 22 points to lead the Saints.
The Scots travel to St. Peter, Minn., to play Gustavus on Saturday, Jan. 17. The MIAC contest begins at 1:00 p.m.
