ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team closed out its own invitational with a three-set victory over Caltech on the last day of the Macalester Invitational Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots (2-8) also fell to Simpson 3-0 in today's first game.
Against Caltech (2-6), Macalester had to work overtime in the first and third sets to earn the win, 26-24, 25-16, 26-24. In the first set, kills by sophomores
Hannah Eisenman (Cary, N.C./Green Level) and
Adonia Anene (North Hollywood, Calif./The Buckley School) helped the Scots break a 21-21 tie and create set point, 24-22. The Beavers answered with two consecutive points, only to have Anene and junior middle blocker
Alia Sherrow (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor School) deliver back-to-back kills to take the first set. Junior outside hitter
MiLani Terrell (Cypress, Texas/Tomball Memorial) had five kills in the set, with Anene and senior right side
Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe West) adding four kills each.
The second set was all Scots, who closed with an 8-3 run capped by a kill from Rahe for a 25-16 win. Rahe and Anene notched four kills apiece in the set. Neither team took much of a lead in the third set until Macalester broke a 13-13 tie with four straight points. Caltech responded, eventually tying the score at 20-20 before the Scots rallied for a 4-0 run to create match point. Again the Beavers answered with four points to knot the set at 24-24, only to have Macalester take the set and match on a Caltech attack error and a kill from Rahe, 26-24.
Anene finished with a career-high 12 kills to go with 10 digs and three blocks. Rahe contributed 10 kills, while Terrell and Eisenman each had eight kills. Sophomore
Camilia Jones (Orlando, Fla.) and junior
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) tallied 19 and 13 assists, respectively. Sherrow recorded four blocks defensively, and sophomore defensive specialist
Elizabeth Joo (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) and Morrow each notched 16 digs.
In the first game of the day, Simpson held off Macalester in the first set and won, 25-23, 25-21, 25-16. Rahe led the Scots with seven kills, and Terrell and junior middle blocker
Sydney Stratton (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) added six kills apiece. Joo led the defense with 14 digs, with Anene contributing five kills and 11 digs.
Macalester plays a pair of matches at the Carleton-St. Olaf Tournament next weekend. The Scots face the Univ. of Chicago at 10:00 a.m. and Dubuque at 2:00 p.m. at Carleton on Saturday, Sept. 20.
