Women’s Soccer: Macalester Blanks Bethel, 5-0 in Non-League Match

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team tallied five goals while keeping  Bethel University off the scoreboard in a non-conference game Thursday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 3-1 with the win, their third shutout of the season. The Royals, who will come back to Macalester Stadium for a MIAC contest on Nov. 1, drop to 0-4-1.

Just 3:14 into the game, Macalester struck first with a free kick that junior forward Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) sent from the left sideline towards the goal. The ball skipped through to junior midfielder Abbey Birkey (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), who deflected it past Bethel goalkeeper Abby Wright. In the 28th minute, Nhouyvanisvong received a pass from first year Nisha Wetter (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) and hit a shot from 25 yards out for a 2-0 lead. The Scots weren't done yet in the first half, as first year midfielder Evelyn Savoie (Northbridge, Mass./Marianopolis Preparatory School) passed the ball up the middle to forward Mikayla Edmunds (Falls Church, Va./Georgetown Visitation), who blasted a shot from 18 yards out into the goal for a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Less than 10 minutes after halftime, sophomore forward Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) found first year forward Lindsay Edmonson (North Kingstown, R.I./LaSalle Academy) in the penalty area to the left of the goal. Edmonson dribbled to the middle and scored from 15 yards out for a 4-0 lead. Then in the 86th minute, Edmonson set up Hamilton for a one-timer from right in front of the goal for the fifth goal of the game.

The Scots took 17 shots compared to five for Bethel and put 11 on goal. All three Macalester goalkeepers played, with junior Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) started and made two saves in the first half. Sophomore Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School), who made one save, and junior Ramatoulaye Bah (Paris, France/United World College Maastricht) split the second half.

Macalester travels to face Wartburg College on Saturday, Sept. 13 for a non-conference game. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa.
