WAVERLY, Iowa – The Macalester College women's soccer team battled Wartburg College on the road, falling 1-0 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Salzwedel Field. The loss is the second 1-0 defeat of the season for the Scots, who are now 3-2. The Knights improve to 2-4 on the year.
Just 11:07 into the game, Wartburg notched the only goal they would need when Athena Webster sent a long ball across midfield to Sami Webster, who placed a shot just inside the left post from 20 yards out. Macalester took nine shots over the remainder of the game and put two on goal, but the Scots were unable to pull even. Junior defender
Miya Whiteley (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and first year forwards
Lindsay Edmonson (North Kingstown, R.I./LaSalle Academy) and
Mikaela Edmunds (Falls Church, Va./Georgetown Visitation) had Macalester's shots on goal for the game.
Junior goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) started and made six saves in the first half, with sophomore
Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) playing the second half and recording one save. Tulla Jensen made all three saves for Wartburg, which held a slight 12-11 edge in shots.
Macalester begins its MIAC schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at St. Catherine. The MIAC opener starts at 4:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
