SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Macalester College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought victory on the road against Regional opponent UW-Superior, 2-1 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at SCCU Stadium. The win gives the Scots a 4-1 record on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-3.
Macalester opened the scoring just 3:24 after the opening kickoff. Junior midfielder
Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) stole the ball and dribbled across midfield up the right side before finding junior forward
Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield in the middle. Liptzen sent a pass to the left side to junior forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), who scored from 15 yards out into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. UW-Superior answered in the 16th minute with a goal by Jake Kidd to tie the match. Just over four minutes later, the Scots regained the lead when junior midfielder
Jack Freimann (Denver, Colo./Northfield) knocked in a rebound off a shot from Blattman to make the score 2-1.
The Yellowjackets, who won the Midwest Conference and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Playoffs last year, managed two shots on goal the rest of the way, as Macalester kept the hosts off the scoreboard to clinch the win. Junior goalkeeper
Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./Central) registered two saves for his fourth win of the season. The Scots held a 9-8 edge in shots taken, with Luke Lockman tallying four saves for the Yellowjackets.
Next up for Macalester is another non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 13 against Nebraska Wesleyan. The match starts at 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
