Men’s Soccer: Macalester Rolls On with 4-0 Win vs. St. Norbert

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Four different players scored, as the Macalester College men's soccer team won its second consecutive game to open the season, 4-0 over St. Norbert College in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, who beat Linfield, 3-0 on Friday, have yet to yield a goal in 180 minutes played.

Senior midfielder Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a nifty goal, weaving around defenders on the right side and scoring from a sharp angle near the goal line for a 1-0 lead. Just 2:33 later, senior forward Parker Etzbach (Wilton, Conn./Wooster School) stole the ball on the right side and passed to first year midfielder Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison), who dribbled in and scored from 20 yards out off the crossbar.

In the 41st minute it was Etzbach's turn to find the net. Junior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) dribbled in from midfield and blasted a shot from 18 yards out that rang off the far post. Etzbach chased down the rebound and scored from eight yards out for a 3-0 halftime lead. Senior defender Alex Beck-Ruiz (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) tallied the final goal of the game in the 65th minute, when he received a long pass from senior midfielder Tanguy Lesegretain (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) and scored from 15 yards out on the left side.

So far this season, all seven goals by Macalester have been scored by seven different players. In 18 games last year, 10 Scots scored 33 goals, including 22 goals from players who are no longer on the team.

Up next for Macalester is a non-conference match against regional foe Wartburg College on Friday, Sept. 5. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa.
