WAVERLY, Iowa – Junior forward
Chris Frantz tallied the game's only goal, as the Macalester College men's soccer team went on the road and beat Wartburg College, 1-0 in a key regional matchup Friday night at Salzwedel Field. The Scots remain unbeaten at 3-0 with their third straight shutout, while the Knights fall to 1-1-1.
Macalester registered the only goal it would need in the 21st minute. First year midfielder
Kuba Ferguson (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar) dribbled to the top of the penalty area and found Frantz, who blasted a shot off the crossbar and in from 12 yards out. It was the first goal of the season and the 13th goal of his career for Frantz, who scored six goals in each of his first two seasons as a Scot.
Wartburg's best chance to tie the score came in the 61st minute, when a shot by Lwings Kabula hit the post. Macalester had to hold off the Knights with just 10 players down the stretch after a Macalester player was given a red card in the 69th minute. But Wartburg managed just one shot on goal the rest of the way, as the Scots limited the Knights' scoring chances over the last 20 minutes.
Junior goalkeeper
Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) faced 24 Wartburg shots, but only four were on goal. Moseman made all four saves for his first career shutout in his first complete game as a Scot. Macalester took seven shots and put two on goal.
The Scots play another Iowa school on Sunday, Sept. 7, as Luther College visits John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
