ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team battled Hamline University in a hard-fought MIAC dual on Tuesday, with the Scots coming away with a 5-4 win at Holt Courts. Macalester improves to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Pipers fall to 5-8, 2-4 MIAC.
The Scots won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Seniors
Owen Lindstrom (Hanover, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) and
Lucas Wood (Urbana, Ill./University Lab School) won their match at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, with sophomore
Kangyu Li (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Southwest Weiyu) and first year
Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) earning an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Li and Lindstrom were victorious at fourth and fifth singles in straight sets. Hamline won at third and sixth singles in straight sets, then Rumeal Setts outlasted senior
Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century), 6-4, 2-6, 10-1 at first singles to tie the dual at 3-3. Wood and Tyler Rousslang went to a 10-point tie-breaker, with Rousslang leading 10-9 for match point. But Wood fought back, winning the final three points to defeat Rousslang, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 and give Macalester a 5-4 victory. The Scots have won the past 11 meetings with Hamline.
Macalester will play at Carleton on Saturday, April 12. The MIAC dual begins at 11:00 a.m. in Northfield, Minn.
