WINONA, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team was handed a pair of convincing losses by 13th-ranked Saint Mary's University, 10-1 and 7-0, in a MIAC doubleheader that featured the top two teams in the conference standings Tuesday afternoon at Saint Mary's Field. The Scots drop to 22-12 on the season, including a 9-7 mark in the conference. The Cardinals (33-3) remain unbeaten in the MIAC with an 18-0 record in league play.
Saint Mary's dominated the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning, four in the second and three more in the third to lead, 10-0. The Cardinals were aided by three errors in the first three innings while registering nine hits. In the top of the fourth Macalester tallied its lone run after senior
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) singled and sophomore
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) followed with a double to drive in Futchko. Those were the only two hits allowed by Makayla Steffes, who pitched all five innings and struck out six batters.
Macalester struggled to get any offense going in Game 2 against pitcher Kenzie Gatz, mustering three hits in seven innings. First year
Ally Wolf (Valencia, Calif./Valencia) led off the fifth with a single for the Scots' first hit, while Futchko and senior
Madeleine Kemper (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) had singles in the sixth. Saint Mary's scored a run on the bottom of the first, three runs in the third and three runs in the sixth while keeping the Scots off the scoreboard. Bojorquez pitched all six innings for Macalester, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits while walking one and fanning four.
The Scots continue MIAC play on Saturday, April 26 with a MIAC doubleheader at Bethel University. The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
