ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team won a back-and-forth affair with UW-Superior, 10-8 in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The win gives the Scots a 9-19 record on the season, while the Yellowjackets drop to 15-15.
After UW-Superior opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, Macalester responded in the bottom of the first with a run on a single by junior
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) that brought home first year
Tristan Lander (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson). Then in the third, the Scots struck for five runs on five hits to lead, 6-2. Senior
Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) doubled to score first year
Aram Dombalagian (Glenview, Ill./North Shore Country Day School), then came home along with Planko on a two-run single by sophomore
Braden LaChapelle (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson). Later in the inning, first year
Bobby Munoz (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) hit a two-run double to plate juniors
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) and
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) for a 6-2 lead.
After the Yellowjackets scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, Macalester answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on another two-run double by Munoz to restore its 4-run lead, 8-4. But UW-Superior did not surrender, as the visitors pushed four runs across on four hits in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 8-8. The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. With two out and junior
Brennan Murley (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) on second base, sophomore
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) singled to plate Murley with the go-ahead run. Munoz followed with his third double of the game to drive in Peacock for a 10-8 advantage. The Yellowjackets put runners on first and third with two out, but sophomore pitcher
Isaiah Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Northbrook) struck out the next batter to end the game.
Munoz turned in his best game as a Scot, going 3-for-4 with a walk, three doubles and five runs batted in. Murakami went 3-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, while Lander and Alexander each had two hits. Ramirez pitched the final two innings, shutting down UW-Superior without allowing a hit and striking out three batters to earn the win.
Macalester hosts the University of Northwestern on Tuesday, April 22 in a single non-conference game. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
