NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Macalester College softball team visited Carleton today for a weekend doubleheader with the Knights on the Ele Hansen Field. The Scots waxed their shiny foes, winning the first game 5-3 and the second 4-0. Mac improves to 18-8 overall and 5-3 in the MIAC, while Carleton sinks to 7-19 overall and 1-7 in-conference on the season.
In the first duel, senior Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) doubled and then came home when senior Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) reached second on a Carleton error. After she advanced to third, Futchko then came home herself off a wild pitch.
Neither team scored again until the fifth, when they each burst onto the stat sheet again. Another error allowed sophomore Martha Miller (Medford, Wis./Medford) to reach home, followed by first year Ally Wolf (Valencia, Calif./Valencia) who reached home off a single from sophomore Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken). Then, sophomore Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa/Northwest) reached off a single from first year Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School).
The Knights fired off a three-run retort in the bottom of the fifth, but the Scots held them scoreless for the final two innings to close it out. In 5.1 innings, Miller struck out four batters, had zero errors and allowed zero runs, four hits and four walks for the win.
In the second game, Mac continued to prosper. Nicholson came home off a Knight error in the first to put the first run on the board. In the second, Wolf pounded her first career home run to put the Scots up 2-0. Nicholson followed it up with her first triple of the season to bring Johnson across. In the fifth, sophomore Monica Montoya (Blue Island, Ill./Dwight D. Eisenhower) rounded home to tally the final Scot run.
Sophomore Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) pitched all seven innings of the shutout. She struck out eight batters while giving up eight hits and two walks without an error.
The softball Scots will play another doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, April 13 against Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn. The first game will commence at 1 p.m.
