TUCSON, Ariz. – A complete game shutout from senior pitcher
Cam Scholl (Belmont, Calif./Carlmont) highlighted a dominant 7-0 win for the Macalester College baseball team. Just one day after the Scots allowed Wesleyan to score 11 runs, Scholl quieted the Cardinals offense for a full nine frames. The Scots record is now 4-7 with just one game remaining in the Tucson Invitational and before conference play.
Scholl cruised through a perfect first inning and only allowed one hit in the second, which was immediately erased by a double play. A Wesleyan runner reached second base in the third inning through a single and a steal, but Scholl left him stranded. The Macalester offense got started in the bottom of the third inning, with a leadoff single by junior
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) creating trouble on the basepaths. After his teammates moved him over to third base, Paulsen scored on a sacrifice fly from junior
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms) to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
Following another scoreless inning in the fourth from Scholl, Paulsen widened the lead with an RBI single to score junior
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./ Winston Churchill). In the fifth, two walks to start the inning set up a 2RBI double from junior
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./ Walt Whitman). Alexander was driven in by first year
Aram Dombalagian (Glenview, Ill./North Shore Country Day) to make the score 5-0 to Macalester.
After he worked his way out of a jam in the fourth inning, Scholl didn't allow any batters to reach second base for the rest of the game. The senior righty finished with seven strikeouts in a full nine-inning outing, only allowing five hits and one walk. Scholl completed the shutout in just 107 pitches, thanks to his lights-out performance in the later innings. His record on the season is now 2-1.
The Scots finished up their scoring in the seventh inning with a 2-run home run for Alexander, driving in junior
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich/Northville). This homer is Alexander's first of the year, coming off All-MIAC honorable mention honors in the 2024 season.
The Scots will finish up the Tucson Invitational with their second game against UT Dallas on Saturday, Mar. 22 at 11am CDT, 10am MST.
