CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team won both of its games on Monday at THE Spring Games held at Legends Way Ballfields. The Scots improved to 7-3 on the season after beating Wellesley 5-2 and Edgewood 8-0 in five innings. Sophomore
Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa/Northwest) delivered eight runs batted in on the day, including a walk-off grand slam against Edgewood.
In the day's first game, Wellesley scored a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Macalester's bats, which had produced just two runs in 17 innings in Florida, woke up in a big way in the top of the sixth. The Scots pushed five runs across on six hits in the inning to gain the upper hand, 5-2. Sophomores
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) and Johnson each had two-run singles, and sophomore
Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) also singled home a run. Sophomores
Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken) and
Rebecca Heinze (Rosemount, Minn./Prescott) and first year
Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) added hits in the inning.
Sophomore pitcher
Rileigh Morlock (Lincoln, Ill./Normal Community West) gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, but a lineout double play and a groundout ended the inning. Morlock then retired the side in order in the seventh to close out the win. In seven innings, she gave up two runs on six hits while fanning four without a walk for her third victory of the season. Bojorquez had three hits to lead the offense, with Welch and senior
Renee Nicholson (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) delivering two hits apiece.
Against Edgewood, the Scots loaded the bases in the second inning and scored one run on a walk by Butler. Then in the third, Johnson hit a two-out single to score Bojorquez and Welch for a 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, sophomore pitcher
Martha Miller (Medford, Wis./Medford) was keeping the Eagles off the bases and the scoreboard, allowing two hits in the first two innings and retiring the side in the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Macalester loaded the bases on a walk and two errors before a grounder by Holland allowed senior
Sophie Futchko (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) to score from third. With two outs and the bases still full, Johnson stepped up and hit a home run down the right field line to end the game, 8-0. It was her first career home run.
Johnson went 2-for-2 with two runs and six RBIs against Edgewood and 3-for-6 with eight RBIs on the day. Miller tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out five without a walk in five innings to improve to 2-1.
