MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's tennis team outlasted UW-Stevens Point, 4-3 in a non-conference dual Saturday night at Baseline Tennis Center. The Scots improve to 3-0 on the season with the win, while the Pointers fall to 5-7.
In doubles, seniors
Liam Lynch (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and
Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) downed Steven Benoy and Frederick Diehl, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. The Scots earned the doubles point with a win at No. 2 doubles, as sophomore
Kangyu Li (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Southwest Weiyu) and first year
Beckett Annes (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) defeated Connor Kryscio and Ben Temple, 7-5.
Four of the six singles matches went to a tie-breaker, with Macalester winning three of them to clinch the match. Senior
Lucas Wood (Urbana, Ill./University Lab School) edged Dawson Froemming, 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 at second singles, Li topped Diehl, 6-4, 5-7, 10-2 at No. 4 singles, and Annes outlasted Anthony Janes, 7-5, 2-6, 10-7. Annes' win came with the team score tied at 3-3, clinching the victory for Macalester.
Macalester will face UC-Santa Cruz in another non-conference dual on Friday, Feb. 14. The first matches start at 6:30 p.m. at Gustavus in St. Peter, Minn.
