MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College women's tennis team turned in several strong performances to edge the University of Northwestern, 4-3 in a non-conference dual Saturday afternoon at Baseline Tennis Center. The Scots even their record at 2-2 overall on the season, while the Eagles drop to 1-2.
Macalester opened the dual with a win at No. 1 doubles, with juniors
Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and
Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) topping Abby Johnson and Paige Johnson, 6-2. However, the Eagles were able to win the matches at second and third doubles to earn the doubles point.
In singles, Trevathan blanked Abby Johnson, 6-0, 6-0 and Haugen defeated Paige Johnson, 6-4, 6-2. Senior
Megan Twomey (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) downed Elise Jarchow, 6-4, 6-4 for the Scots' third point. After the Eagles won at fourth and fifth singles, it all came down to No. 6 singles, with first year
Mary Jacobson (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell-Newburg) outlasting Isabelle Sullivan, 6-4, 7-5 to give Macalester the win.
Next up for the Scots is a MIAC dual at Saint Mary's University on Saturday, Mar. 1, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
