Men’s Basketball: Macalester Falls at Bethel in MIAC Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team started MIAC play Wednesday evening at Bethel University, with the Royals coming out on top, 74-67 in the Robinson Center. The Scots are now 4-4 overall on the season, while Bethel improves to 2-3. Senior forward Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) had another big night with 27 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

Midway through the first half, the Royals broke open a close game, turning a 12-12 tie into a nine-point lead buoyed by three three-pointers from Jay Neubert that made the score 23-14. A pair of baskets by Shannon and a three from first year guard Owen Walther (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) brought Macalester to within two, 23-21 with 7:47 left in the half. After Bethel pushed the lead up to five, Walther hit another three that sparked an 8-2 run to give the Scots their first lead of the game, 31-30. Senior forward Ryan Brush (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue) hit two free throws and a three-pointer in the run. The Royals eventually tied the score at 34-34 before Brush drained another three for a 37-34 advantage. Shannon answered a Bethel basket with two free throws to make the halftime score 39-36 Macalester.

The Scots shot 45.2 percent from the field in the first half and made just three turnovers while scoring eight points off eight Bethel miscues.

Early in the second half, Blake Schmitz hit a pair of threes in an 8-2 Royals run to regain the lead, 44-41. Macalester briefly took the lead back on baskets by Shannon and junior guard Kyle Jilla (Dallas, Texas/Plano West), but Bethel used an 11-3 run to take a 55-48 advantage with 12:13 remaining. The Scots didn't give up, reeling off a 14-4 spree for a three-point edge, 62-59 with 4:39 on the clock. Sophomore guard Joaquin Aguillon (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) tallied the final five points in the run, while Shannon also had five points.

Over the next four-plus minutes Macalester went cold, shooting just 1-of-6 from the field as the Royals retook the lead with a 12-2 run that made the score 71-64 with 19 seconds left. Shannon hit a three with eight seconds to play, but it wasn't enough to avoid defeat in the first MIAC contest of the season. The Scots ended up shooting 41.0 percent from the field for the game compared to 43.5 percent for Bethel.

Shannon made 9-of-16 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line on his way to a game-high 27 points. He also led Macalester with 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Brush finished with 12 points and six rebounds, and Aguillon contributed nine points. Neubert paced the Royals with 23 points.

The Scots play another MIAC road game on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Hamline University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in St. Paul.
