Men’s Basketball: Scots Lose Shootout at Hamline, 94-84

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team and Hamline University combined to score 178 points in a MIAC game at Hamline, with the Pipers coming out on top, 94-84 Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena. The Scots (4-5 overall, 0-2 MIAC) held the lead at halftime but couldn't hold off Hamline, which improves to 6-2, 1-1 MIAC.

Macalester took control early in the first half, opening with a 21-9 run over the first 7:40. Junior guard Kyle Jilla (Dallas, Texas/Plano West) hit a pair of the threes in the run, with senior forward Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) also scoring six points. The Pipers came as close as nine points before the Scots pushed the lead up to as many as 16 points, including 51-35 following a three from senior forward Ryan Brush (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue). Dane DeDominces scored the final basket of the half to make the halftime score 51-37 Macalester. The Scots shot 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the field, including 8-of-16 from three-point range, in the first half. Shannon and Brush led the way with 14 and nine points, respectively.

In the second half, Hamline quickly got back into the game, erasing Macalester's advantage with a 19-3 run over the first six minutes to take its first lead of the game, 56-54. A basket by first year guard Owen Walther (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) and a three-pointer from first year guard Noah Hamburge (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) restored the lead for the Scots, 59-56 with 12:55 remaining.

Later in the half, a three-pointer from first year guard Jamal Randle (St. Paul, Minn./Great River School) gave Macalester a 70-66 edge with 9:40 on the clock. Over the next five minutes, the Pipers used three three-pointers to ignite a 15-0 run and take control of the game, 81-70 with 4:45 left to play. Sophomore guard Joaquin Aguillon (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) ended the run with a three, and Brush followed with a three-pointer of his own to cut the deficit to five, 81-76. After a Hamline basket, Brush scored again and Shannon hit a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game, 83-80 at the three-minute mark. But that's as close as the Scots would get, as Hamline extended its lead back up to nine before eventually finishing off the 94-84 win.

The Pipers made 64.7 percent of their field goal attempts in the second half and shot 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from beyond the arc after halftime. Macalester made 8-of-15 from three-point range in the second half and finished with a 51.6 shooting percentage from deep for the game (16-of-31).

Shannon finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Scots. Brush was 6-of-7 from the field and scored 14 points, while Aguillon added 11 points, seven boards and three assists. All 10 Scots who played scored at least three points. Brendan Ebel scored a game-high 25 points to go with 11 rebounds for the Pipers.

Macalester steps out of conference play to host Martin Luther College on Monday, Dec. 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
