RIVER FALLS, Wis. – First year guard
Noah Hamburge (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) made 5-of-6 from three-point range to lead the Macalester College men's basketball team to an 88-81 victory over UW-River Falls in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Page Arena. The win gives the Scots a 4-3 record on the season, while the Falcons drop to 2-4.
Trailing 11-8 after five minutes in the first half, Macalester reeled off an 11-1 run to gain the upper hand, 19-12 with 12 minutes left in the half. First year guards
Lucas Myer (San Diego, Calif./The Bishop's School) and
Jamal Randle (St. Paul, Minn./Great River School) hit threes in the run. Over the final six minutes of the half, Hamburge caught fire, draining four three-pointers to help the Scots build a 42-30 advantage with 1:34 on the clock. UW-River Falls scored the final three points of the half to make the halftime score 42-33 Macalester. Hamburge was 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc en route to 14 first-half points.
Early in the second half, first year guard
Owen Walther (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) made a three to push the lead to 45-33. The Falcons cut the deficit to 45-39 with back-to-back three-pointers by Gavin Ralph and Owen Havlik, only to have the Scots use a 15-6 run to extend the lead back up to 15, 60-45 with 12:30 remaining. Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and Hamburge each had five points in the run, with sophomore guard
Joaquin Aguillon (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) also hitting a three. The lead grew to as many as 16 points, with UW-River Falls coming as close as six points in the final minute of play before Macalester secured the 88-81 victory.
The Scots shot 57.7 percent from the field in the second half compared to 43.6 percent for the Falcons. Hamburge finished with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 5-of-6 from deep in 23 minutes off the bench. Shannon contributed 16 points, six rebounds and six assists while making 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Aguillon also had 16 points and six assists, with first year forward
Javier Diaz (Lake Oswego, Ore./Tualatin) adding 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Myer made it five Scots in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. Micah Thompson and Jack Leifker each scored 19 points for UW-River Falls.
Macalester begins MIAC play on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Bethel University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
