LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Macalester College men's basketball team traveled to the Chicago area to face Lake Forest College and lost the non-league game, 99-70 Saturday afternoon at the Sports & Recreation Center. The result evens the Scots' record at 3-3 on the season, while the Foresters improve to 2-3.
Early in the game Macalester erased an 8-4 start for Lake Forest with an 8-2 run of its own that included three-pointers by sophomore guard
Joaquin Aguillon (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) and first year forward
Javier Diaz (Lake Oswego, Ore./Tualatin) for a 12-10 edge. Another Diaz three later in the half put the Scots ahead, 17-14 with 10:44 left in the half. Macalester held a narrow 23-22 lead at the 7:29 mark when the Foresters used a 13-2 run to break open a close game and gain the upper hand, 36-24 with 2:36 on the clock. The lead grew to 13 before a basket by senior forward
Noah Shannon (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) in the final seconds of the first half made the halftime score 41-30 Lake Forest. The Foresters tallied 17 points off 10 Macalester turnovers in the half.
Senior forward
Ryan Brush (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue) hit a three on the Scots' first possession of the second half to cut the deficit to eight, 41-33. The margin was nine, 49-40 following a three from Shannon when Lake Forest put the game out of reach with a 20-3 spree that gave the hosts an insurmountable 69-43 advantage with 10:18 remaining. Macalester never came closer than 24 points, as the Foresters won the first meeting with the Scots since 2013. Lake Forest scorched the nets shooting 61.3 percent from the field after halftime compared to 32.4 percent for Macalester.
Shannon paced the Scots with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists, with Aguillon adding 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high nine assists. Junior forward
Kyle Jilla (Dallas, Texas/Plano West) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, while first year forward
Jaden Feller (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) tallied a career-high 11 points. Brush and Diaz ended up with eight points apiece. Alex Forowycz led all players with 23 points in the win for the Foresters.
Macalester continues non-conference play with a game at UW-River Falls on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
