Macalester earned the MIAC's automatic bid to nationals by winning the MIAC Playoffs, defeating Gustavus, 2-1 in the semifinals and beating No. 4 St. Olaf, 4-1 in the championship game on Nov. 8. This is the Scots' 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the first since the 2015 team advanced to the second round with a win over St. Scholastica. Macalester, which finished second in the MIAC during the regular season, is led by All-MIAC midfielders
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) and
Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine), and senior defender
Nick Kent (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park). Maina has a team-leading 26 points on eight goals and 10 assists, while Blattman has compiled 21 points on five goals and 11 assists. Junior
Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) and first year
Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) have shared the goalkeeping duties this season, with Moseman registering a 0.53 goals against average in 11 starts, and Ratner posting a 0.85 GAA in eight starts.
Macalester's opponent is
Illinois Wesleyan, who won the CCIW Playoffs with a 1-0 victory over North Park last Saturday. The Titans were second behind Wheaton in the conference standings with a 5-1-2 mark in CCIW play. Ryder Coleman has six goals and six assists on the season to lead Illinois Wesleyan, with Ben Lyons tallying six goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Sam Kedzior has started all but one game for the Titans, posting a goals against average of 0.93. Coleman, Kedzior and Jerry Smazil were named to the All-CCIW Team earlier this week. This will be the first meeting between Macalester and IWU, which set a program record with 13 wins this season.
UW Eau-Claire captured the WIAC Playoff title with a 1-0 win over UW-Stevens Point, giving the Blugolds both the WIAC regular-season and playoff championships for the second straight year. Carson Kowalski, who scored the game-winner in the title game, was chosen the WIAC Defensive Player of the Year while also leading his team in scoring with eight goals and six assists for 22 points. Tate McDermott notched 10 assists and joined Kowalski on the All-WIAC Team. The Blugolds, who are in just their fifth season as an intercollegiate program, have made the NCAA Tournament four times, advancing to the national quarterfinals last season.
MSOE beat Aurora in the championship game of the NACC Playoffs, 1-0 on a goal by Nico Picha. The Raiders finished fourth in the conference with an 8-3-1 record and had to win three games as the No. 4 seed to take the NACC Playoff crown. Pica scored 12 goals this season and had four assists for 28 points, earning All-NACC first team honors. Tanner Cellio and Adrian Manchado also were recognized on the first team. Goalkeeper Asher Harris, an All-NACC second team choice, started 16 of the Raiders' 22 games and registered a goals against average of 0.70. This is the second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament for MSOE, who lost to Gustavus in the first round a year ago.
