ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team played a MIAC match at St. Catherine University Wednesday night in the Butler Center. The Scots split the first two sets but dropped the final two sets to lose 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15 and fall to 3-15 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The Wildcats are now 6-12, 2-2 MIAC.
The first set was close, with nine ties and four lead changes. Macalester trailed 18-17 late in the set, only to have the Wildcats use a 7-3 run to take the first set, 25-20. The Scots turned the tables on the hosts in the second set, scoring three of the final four points to win, 25-23 and tie the match at 1-1. Sophomore outside hitter
Adonia Anene (North Hollywood, Calif./The Buckley School) delivered a team-best five kills in the set, with senior right side
Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe West) adding four kills.
The third set also was tight until the Wildcats turned a 15-15 tie into a 25-17 victory to take a 2-1 advantage. In the fourth set, St. Catherine took control by leading from start to finish in a 25-15 victory. The Wildcats tallied 59 kills in the match compared to 37 for the Scots.
Anene finished with a team-high 14 kills to go with 12 digs and three blocks in a solid all-around effort. Rahe had seven kills and three blocks, with junior middle blocker
Sydney Stratton (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) adding six kills and a team-best four blocks. Junior setter
Hannah Morrow (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) racked up 28 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore libero
Elizabeth Joo (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) led the Scots with 14 digs. Liz Rosen paced the Wildcats with 14 kills.
Macalester hosts Saint Mary's University in a MIAC match on Saturday, Oct. 11 as a part of Macalester's
Mac Fest celebration. The team also will honor its alumni. The match starts at 5:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
