ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team scored three times in the first half, including two goals from junior midfielder
Georgia LeWin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School), then held on for a 3-2 victory over Saint Benedict in a MIAC match Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots (4-6-1) pick up their first MIAC win of the season and improve to 1-4-1, while the Bennies fall to 5-8, 3-3 MIAC.
Just 2:16 into the game, junior forward
Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) took a loose ball at midfield, dribbled in and found LeWin-Mills in the penalty area to the right of the goal. Her shot found the left side of the goal for a 1-0 Macalester lead. Then in the 10th minute, LeWin-Mills collected a ball from junior forward
Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston) near the top of the penalty area, powered her way through two defenders and scored with the outside of her right foot for her second goal of the game and third of the season.
The Scots weren't done yet. In the 19th minute, Nhouyvanisvong dribbled down the right side and sent a pass into the middle for first year forward
Mikayla Edmunds (Falls Church, Va./Georgetown Visitation), who hit the ball with her first touch into the left side of the goal for a commanding 3-0 lead. The goal was Edmunds' third of the season.
In the second half the Bennies built a comeback attempt. Gabby Fernholz scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute, then Summer Seamans found the net off an assist from Sienna Chase in the 61st minute to make it a one-goal game. Saint Benedict pressed for a third goal and put three shots on frame in the final 16 minutes of the game. But sophomore goalkeeper
Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) made all three saves to preserve the win.
Junior goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) started in goal for the Scots and made one save in the first half. Salazar took over and registered four saves in the second half. The Bennies also played two goalkeepers, with Rhianna collecting two saves in the first half and Anya Claire McGrath making four saves in the second half.
Macalester's five remaining MIAC games are against the bottom half of the conference standings, starting with 12th-place Concordia College on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The conference game begins at 4:00 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
