DECORAH, Iowa – The Macalester College men's soccer team led early and held on to defeat Luther College, 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Luther College Soccer Field. The win is the third in a row for the Scots, who are now 4-1 on the season. The Norse fall to 1-2-1.
Six minutes into the game, junior defender
Nick Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) sent a long pass down the left side to junior midfielder
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito). Maina took a shot from a sharp angle that beat Luther goalkeeper Jack Bell for a 1-0 Macalester lead. Later in the half, sophomore defender
Charles Wriedt (St. Paul, Minn./Central) scored off an assist from senior forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) in the 33rd minute. Just before halftime, Luther made it a one-goal game again with a tally by Francesco Mungari in the 45th minute.
The Scots didn't wait long to regain their two-goal edge, as Haenicke scored off an assist from sophomore forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) 2:44 after halftime for a 3-1 lead. It was Haenicke's team-leading fourth goal of the season. The Norse did not concede, with Mungari scoring again in the 62nd minute to make the score 3-2. Senior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) was required to make three saves after Mungari's second goal to preserve the win.
Price finished with six saves, while Bell had five saves for Luther. Macalester recorded 18 shots to 15 for the Norse for the game.
Next up for the Scots is another non-conference game on Friday, Sept. 13 at home against UW-Whitewater. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
