ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore forward
Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored the game's only goal in the 76th minute to lift the Macalester College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UW-Whitewater Friday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The win is the fourth in a row for the Scots, who are now 5-1 on the season. The Warhawks suffer their first loss of the season and are 3-1-1.
In the first half, Macalester controlled play and took 10 shots, with five on frame, but could not get one past UW-Whitewater goalkeeper Jonathan Fenton. The game remained scoreless into the second half until the 76th minute. Junior midfielder
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) carried the ball down the left side, cut it back and fired a pass into the penalty area towards Da, whose one-timer beat Fenton and sent the Scots into celebration mode. The goal was Da's third of the season, with Maina registering his third assist. Senior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) had to make a save in the 89th minute to preserve the win and the shutout.
Price finished with six saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 15th clean sheet in his career. Fenton also had six saves, as the Scots held a 16-8 advantage in shots.
Macalester plays its final non-conference game of the season on Sunday, Sept.15 against Grinnell. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
