Men’s Soccer: Scots Top Grinnell in Final Non-League Contest, 4-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team concluded its non-conference schedule with a 4-0 win over Grinnell College Sunday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots head into the MIAC schedule on a five-game winning streak with a 6-1 record overall, while Grinnell falls to 1-2-3.

Macalester broke a scoreless tie in the 16th minute, when senior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) hit a one-timer off a pass from junior midfielder Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, it was Maina who received a pass from sophomore forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), weaved through the defense and blasted a shot into the right side of the goal. Then in the 22nd minute, Frantz collected an errant pass from Grinnell's goalkeeper and scored into the open net from 35 yards out for a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, Haenicke tallied his second goal of the game and sixth of the season when the ball caromed off the post right to Haenicke 10 yards out. He chested the ball down and fired it into the goal for his 29th career goal, which ranks seventh all-time at Macalester.

Senior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) registered two saves in 74 minutes in goal, while sophomore goalkeeper PJ Pozniak (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford) played the final 16 minutes in the shared shutout. The Scots held a 17-5 advantage in shots, as Macalester defeated its fifth opponent from the state of Iowa this season.

The Scots begin MIAC play on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Saint John's. The game starts at 4:00 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn.
