Men’s Soccer: Macalester Wins MIAC Opener at Saint John’s, 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A goal by sophomore forward Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) in the 63rd minute was enough for the Macalester College men's soccer team to defeat Saint John's University, 1-0 in the first MIAC game for both teams Tuesday afternoon at Haws Field. The victory is the sixth in a row for the Scots (7-1), who are ranked third in the region and received votes in the latest Division III national poll. The Johnnies fall to 2-3 overall, 0-1 MIAC.

After a scoreless first half that saw Macalester put four shots on goal compared to one for Saint John's, the Scots scored the only goal they would need in the 63rd minute. Macalester earned a corner kick on the right side, and sophomore midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) sent a left-footed kick in tight on Johnnies' goalkeeper Evan Siefken. Siefken bobbled the ball and it popped out to Da, who headed it into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Da now has four goals on the season and two game-winning goals, with both coming in 1-0 games.

Saint John's pressed for the equalizer and put four shots on goal after Da's tally. But senior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) was up to the task, making all four saves to preserve the win and the shutout. Price finished with six saves for the game to register his fifth clean sheet of the season and 16th of his career. Siefken had seven saves, as the Scots outshot the Johnnies, 15-9.

Macalester continues play in the rugged MIAC with a home game against No. 6 Gustavus on Saturday, Sept. 21. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
