Men’s Soccer: Macalester Battles No. 4 Gustavus in 1-0 Defeat

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team lost a close match with No. 4 Gustavus Adolphus, 1-0 Wednesday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The game, which started on Saturday, had been suspended in the 24th minute due to lightning and resumed from that point. With the loss, the Scots are now 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC. Gustavus remains unbeaten at 7-0-1, 2-0 MIAC.

Less than five minutes after the game resumed, Macalester had a golden chance to score. A loose ball in front of the Gustavus goal bounced to senior forward Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy), but his shot missed to the right. Both teams put one shot on goal in the first half, with the Scots holding a slight edge in shots taken, 5-4.

Macalester controlled play for the start of the second half and generated two good scoring chances. Sophomore midfielder Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) took a free kick from 25 yards out and just missed the upper right corner of the goal. About 90 seconds later, a shot by sophomore forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was stopped by Gustavus goalkeeper Egan Bedwell on the goal line.

In the 67th minute, a Gustavus free kick from the right side was sent across to the far post. Darren Chukel headed the ball back across the face of the goal, where junior midfielder Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) cleared it away from the goal. But the ball went to Simon Woods, who scored at the right post for a 1-0 lead. The goal came on the Gusties' lone shot on goal in the second half. One last chance by Edelman in the 89th minute was saved by Bedwell to close out the win.

Macalester held an 11-5 advantage in shots taken, with Bedwell making four saves. Senior goalkeeper Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) recorded one save for the Scots.

Macalester continues MIAC play with a home game against Concordia College on Saturday, Sept. 28 as a part of Mac Fest. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
