CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Macalester College women's soccer team traveled to Southern California to face 22nd-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Friday night at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Stadium. The Scots battled and kept it close but ultimately came up short in a 3-1 loss. The defeat is the first of the season for Macalester (2-1), which had won its first two games by a combined score of 10-0. The Sagehens remain unbeaten at 2-0-1.
Pomona-Pitzer took control of the game early with goals in the fourth and ninth minutes to lead 2-0. The Scots responded in the 20th minute, when sophomore forward
Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston) tallied her third goal of the season to make it a one-goal game. Sophomore goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) was busy in the first half, making eight saves to keep the game close.
In the second half, Macalester managed just one shot on goal, by sophomore forward
Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) in the 65th minute, but also kept the Sagehens off the scoreboard to stay in the game. With time winding down, Pomona-Pitzer added a third goal eight seconds before the final buzzer to ice the game.
Heuga finished with 10 saves for the game, as the Scots were outshot, 25-3. Patricia DePalma made one save for the Sagehens.
Macalester heads to Redlands, Calif., to play the University of Redlands on Sunday, Sept. 8, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time.
