ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) tallied two goals, as the Macalester College men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over Wartburg College in a key regional contest Friday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots are now 3-1 on the season, while the Knights drop to 1-1-1.
Macalester controlled play for much of the match, holding Wartburg without a shot until the 63rd minute. The Scots broke through in the 38th minute, when senior forward
Grant Luce (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) collected a long pass from junior midfielder
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) and dropped it back to Haenicke, who blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Then in the 52nd minute, a handball was called on a Wartburg defender in the penalty area, giving Macalester a penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder
Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) deked Wartburg goalkeeper Henry Eckert to his right, then chipped the ball into the empty net to give the Scots a two-goal lead. Midway through the second half, senior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) was suddenly called upon to maintain the lead, and he answered with a pair of acrobatic saves to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.
With the game well in hand, Haenicke completed his brace in the 83rd minute. Edelman sent a perfect through ball to sophomore forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), who passed the ball out front to Haenicke. The senior, who now has 26 career goals as a Scot, put a one-timer past Eckert for a commanding 3-0 lead.
Macalester outshot Wartburg, 15-7, with Eckert making six saves and Price finishing with four saves for his third shutout in four games this season.
The Scots travel to Decorah, Iowa to take on Luther College on Sunday, Sept. 8. The non-conference game starts at 3:00 p.m.
