Women’s Soccer: Scots Top Crown 5-0, Hamilton and Hanson Shine

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team earned its second 5-0 victory in as many games this season with a non-conference win over Crown College Wednesday night at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, who opened the season with a 5-0 win over the University of Northwestern last Friday, improve to 2-0. The Polars are now 0-2.

Just 4:16 into the game, sophomore forward Avery Ellis (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) knocked home a rebound off a shot from sophomore forward Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston) for the first goal of the game. Despite several Macalester scoring chances, the game remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half. The Scots wasted little time extending their lead in the second half, as Hanson scored off a nice pass from first year forward Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) in the 48th minute. The goal is Hanson's second of the season.

Later in the half it was Hamilton's turn, as the first year tallied back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart to give the Scots a 4-0 advantage in the 56th minute. Sophomore midfielder Gabriela Carillo-Quinones (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) and senior midfielder Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) had the assists. Hamilton now has three goals and two assists after just two games as a Scot. In the 71st minute, a pass from sophomore midfielder Georgia LeWin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School) sprung sophomore forward Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka), who placed a shot just inside the far post for her second goal of the season.

Sophomore Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) and first year Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) split the goalkeeping duties, with Salazar recording two saves in the second half. Macalester took 32 shots compared to three for Crown, as Polars goalkeeper Rachel Fuller made 16 saves.

The Scots travel to Southern California this weekend for a pair of games in the Golden State. Macalester plays Pomona-Pitzer on Friday at 5:00 p.m. Pacific before taking on Redlands on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific.
