ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore forwards
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Cody Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored goals, as the Macalester College men's soccer team defeated Simpson College in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Storm falls to 1-1.
Less than 10 minutes into the game, Macalester tallied the only offense it would need. Junior midfielder
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) sent a cross into the penalty area that was deflected. Frantz reacted and headed the ball into the goal from his knees from five yards out for a 1-0 lead. It remained a one-goal game until three minutes after halftime. Sophomore midfielder
Elijah Edelman (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) sent a through ball to Da, whose perfectly-placed shot from the right side tucked just inside the far post. It was the second goal of the season for Da, who scored in the season opener at Central on Friday.
Macalester maintained possession for the majority of the game and limited the number of scoring chances for Simpson. Senior goalkeeper
Sam Price (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) earned the shutout while the Scots out-shot the Storm, 18-8 for the game.
Next up for the Scots is another home game on Friday, Sept. 6 against Wartburg. The non-conference match begins at 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
