ST. PAUL, Minn. – First year forward
Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) scored an unassisted goal in the 85th minute to give the Macalester College women's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The win gives the Scots a 3-2-2 mark overall and a 1-0-1 record in conference play. The Gusties drop to 3-2-2, 0-2 MIAC.
Both teams played tight defense, with just four shots on goal combined for the match. With time winding down, Hamilton intercepted an errant clearance about 40 yards out, dribbled towards the endline, cut it back and fired a left-footed shot from a sharp angle into the net. The goal is the team-leading fourth of the season for Hamilton, who now has two game-winning goals this year. The Scots were able to keep Gustavus from threatening over the final five minutes, clinching their first win since Sept. 4.
The Gusties held a 12-5 advantage in shots taken, although only one Gustavus shot was on frame. Sophomore goalkeeper
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) made that one save to record her second straight shutout, while Gustavus' Katelyn Olson made two saves.
Macalester hosts Concordia College in a MIAC game that is a part of Mac Fest on Saturday, Sept. 28. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
