ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team began its MIAC schedule with a scoreless draw at the College of Saint Benedict Wednesday afternoon at College Avenue Field. The Scots are now 2-2-2 overall this season, while the Bennies are now 3-1-2.
Near the end of the first half, Macalester had the best scoring chance of the match when a foul was called on Saint Benedict in the Bennies' penalty area. But goalkeeper Annie Waters made the save, diving to her right to keep the game scoreless. In the second half, the Scots put five shots on goal compared to one for Saint Ben's, but were unable to break through. Then in the 87th minute, Saint Benedict was awarded a penalty kick. In a battle of the goalkeepers, sophomore
Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) saved the penalty kick taken by Waters, and the game eventually ended in a tie.
The Bennies held a 19-15 edge in shots taken, but Macalester put six shots on frame for the game compared to four for the hosts. Heuga registered four saves for her first shutout of the season and eighth of her career. Senior midfielder
Ella Short (Denver, Colo./Denver East) led the Scots with two shots on goal.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a home game against Gustavus on Saturday, Sept. 21. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
