Volleyball: Macalester Downs Knights in Three Sets

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team earned a non-conference victory over Martin Luther College in three sets Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots, who won by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-13, improve to 7-3 on the season. The Knights fall to 3-8.

In the first set, the two teams battled to gain the upper hand with neither side leading my more than three points until late. With the score tied at 18-18, Macalester tallied seven of the final eight points to win the set, 25-19. Senior outside hitter Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) had two kills in the run and four in the set. The Scots trailed by as many as five points in the second set before recovering by using a 6-0 run to overcome a 17-16 deficit. Preston again had four kills in the 25-20 win.

The third set was all Scots, who built a 10-2 lead and closed out the set and match with seven unanswered points for a 25-13 win. Junior right side Avery Rahe (Olathe, Kan./Olathe) put away five kills and first year outside hitter Ella Cohen-Richie (Chicago, Ill./Univ. of Chicago Laboratory Schools) added four kills in closing out the win.

Preston led Macalester with 10 kills to go with three blocks, while Rahe notched nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage. Senior right side Grace Galer (Hanover Park, Ill./Schaumburg) contributed six kills and Cohen-Richie finished with five kills and six digs. Senior Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) and first year Camilia Jones (Orlando, Fla.) delivered 12 and nine assists, respectively, with Jones adding a team-high seven digs. Also contributing to the Scots' defense was sophomore middle blocker Alia Sherrow (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylow School) with four blocks.

Macalester heads to UW-La Crosse for a tournament Sept. 20-21. The Scots will face Monmouth on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Luther and Bethany Lutheran on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
