Women’s Soccer: Evans Scores as Scots Draw at Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. – The Macalester College women's soccer team drew 1-1 with Lawrence University on Saturday night in their last game before conference play begins. At Lawrence's Banta Bowl in Appleton, both teams picked up their first split contest of the season. The Scots' record now stands at 2-2-1, and the Vikings moved to 3-2-1.

During a quiet first half, the Scots' offense picked up in the 30th minute with shots by senior Gaby Valle (Compton, Calif./Chadwick School), senior Mikaely Evans (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South), and first year Charlotte Martel (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) forcing the opposing goalkeeper into saves. Martel threatened to score again in the 42nd minute, again turned away by a Vikings save.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Valle deflected the ball wide to Evans outside the penalty area. Evans hit a first-time finish over the onrushing keeper for the first goal of the game. The strike from distance was Evans' first of the season and fourth of her career. Macalester kept the Vikings at bay in the minutes after, but Lawrence equalized in the 60th minute off a free kick. Macalester put shots on goal in the final minutes but couldn't break the deadlock.

First year goalkeeper Lily Salazar (Oakland, Calif./Bentley Upper School) played the full game in net, making two saves. The Scots took 14 shots over the course of the match, with eight on goal, holding the advantage in total shots over Lawrence's seven.

Macalester opens MIAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the College of St. Benedict. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in St. Joseph, Minn.
