Women’s Soccer: Macalester Stuns Eagles in Huge Opening Day Win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team opened the 2024 slate by blanking the Eagles of University of Northwestern (MN), 5-0. The Scots showed out, having five different goal scorers to open the season with a 1-0 record.

For the first thirty minutes, both teams got a feel for each other, both taking chances down the field. However, once the Scots struck, they couldn't be stopped, totaling three goals in eight minutes. It started in the 32nd minute, when first year forward Erica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) scored her first career goal with an assist from sophomore midfielder/forward Gabriela Carrillo-Quinones (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park). Then in the 35th minute, sophomore forward Adi Nhouyvanisvong (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka) doubled the lead with an assist from senior midfielder Mikaely Evans (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South). Nhouyvanisvong assisted goal number three in the 40th minute, which was scored by senior midfielder/forward Gabriela Valle (Compton, Calif./Chadwick School).

The second remained tipped in the Scots' favor. Sophomore forward Julia Hanson (Weston, Mass./Weston) scored in the 56th minute, assisted by Hamilton. Another first year, midfielder Charlotte Martel (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), scored her first collegiate goal in the 59th minute, assisted by sophomore midfielder Georgia LeWin-Mills (St. Paul, Minn./Breck School). Sophomore goalkeeper Abigail Heuga (San Francisco, Calif./Urban School of San Francisco) and senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Ryan (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) split time in goal, and kept Northwestern out of the game.

The Scots' next game will be Wednesday Sept 4 at 7:00 p.m. Macalester hosts Crown at Macalester Stadium.
