MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Macalester baseball team came up short in its MIAC doubleheader against Concordia on Tuesday night, falling 18-7 and 15-1 (7 inn.). The Scots fall to 5-18 (1-7 MIAC) while Concordia moves to 8-14 (5-3 MIAC).
The Scots started out strong with five runs to kick off game one. Sophomore
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) led off with a single, followed by first year
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) with a double. Senior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) got an RBI ground out and junior
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) hit an RBI single to Jones and Peacock. After that, sophomore
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) singled to put runners on first and second. Then fellow sophomore
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) hit a three RBI homer for the 5-0 lead. However, in the bottom half of the inning, the Cobbers scored eight runs and took the lead. Wingard hit an RBI single in the second to bring home Peacock again while Planko was able to score in the third. Despite the rally, the Scots couldn't pick up any more runs while the Cobbers continued to increase their lead and take the game 18-7. Peacock and Planko were 2-for-3 with two runs, while Alexander was 2-for-3 with his three RBI homer.
In game two, the Cobbers scored 13 runs in the first five innings. In the sixth, sophomore
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) reached on a Concordia error and made it to second. He advanced to third on the next play and then scored on the following play. However, the Cobbers were able to limit the Scots to just two hits in the game and take the game 15-1.
Macalester's next doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday April 13. The Scots will be back at Nicholson Field to host Augsburg in another MIAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm.
