ST. PAUL, Minn. – It was a beautiful day out at Nicholson Field this afternoon, as Macalester baseball hosted Augsburg for a MIAC doubleheader. However, in both games, the Scots' rally was cut short, and Macalester dropped two, 3-2 and 5-4. The Scots are now 5-20 (1-9 MIAC).
In the first game, the Auggies took a 1-0 lead in the second. The Scots answered back in the bottom of the fourth. After advancing to second, sophomore
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was able to score off an RBI single from senior
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) to tie the game. Macalester took the lead in the next inning, when
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) smashed a solo home run, his fifth home run of the season. However, in the top of the seventh, the Auggies hit a solo home run to force extra innings and scored the go ahead run in the top of the eighth to take the game 3-2.
Augsburg was able to build a 5-0 lead, scoring runs in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings in game two. In the bottom of the fifth, the Scots began to rally. After back-to-back singles, junior
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) hit an RBI double to bring in sophomore
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) to make it 5-1. The Scots were then able to tack on three runs in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third, sophomore
Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) had an RBI single up the middle to bring in sophomore
Brennan Murley (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Then McCaskey's RBI single brought home sophomore
Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) and Odom's RBI single brought home McCaskey, to put Macalester within one, 5-4. However, the Scots' rally was cut short and they fell in game two.
Odom was 6-for-8 on the day with two RBI's and a solo home run.
Macalester's next doubleheader is scheduled for Monday April 15. The Scots head to Northfield for a MIAC doubleheader against Carleton. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
