NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Macalester baseball headed to Northfield this afternoon for a MIAC doubleheader against Carleton. The Scots came back in game one to take the victory, 6-3. In game two, the Knights and Scots battled to the end, but Carleton came out on top, 11-7. The Scots are now 6-21 (2-10 MIAC).
The Knights got out to a 3-0 after the first two innings of game one. From then on, it was all the Scots. In the top of the fourth, sophomore
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) hit an RBI single to score junior
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and get one run back. Then, the Scots took the lead in the sixth. Sophomore
Brennan Murley (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was able to score off a Knight's error to close the gap to 3-2. Fellow sophomore
Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) cracked a two-RBI single to bring in Alexander and sophomore
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) for the lead, 4-3. In the seventh, junior
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) sealed the deal with a two-run homer, also scoring sophomore
Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) to take the game 6-3. Sophomore
Ben King (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) got the win on the mound, pitching five innings, striking out six Knights. Junior
Jacob Posner (Los Angeles, Calif./Alexander Hamilton) registered the save.
In the second game, Macalester took a 3-0 lead in the third. McCaskey doubled and Paulsen singled and then stole second to put runners in a good scoring position. First year
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) hit a single out to center field to plate McCaskey and Paulsen. Peacock stole second and then scored off an RBI single from senior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis). Macalester added a fourth run at the top of the fifth. Peacock brought home Paulsen, with a bunt single. In the second half of the inning, the Knights cut the lead in half to 4-2. Carleton then took the lead 5-4 in the sixth. At the top of the seventh, Macalester reclaimed the lead. McCaskey and sophomore
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) scored off a Carleton error. Paulsen came home on the next play to make it 7-5. However, the Knights were able to tack on six more runs and defeat the Scots 11-7. Peacock was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI's while Paulsen was 2-for-3 with three runs.
Macalester's next doubleheader is scheduled for Thursday April 18. The Scots head to Mankato for a non-conference doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
