Baseball: Macalester Bested By Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – Macalester baseball returned to conference play today, traveling to St. Peter to take on Gustavus. The Scots fell in a close 9-6 battle in game one and then dropped game two, 11-1. Macalester drops to 8-28 (2-16 MIAC).

The Scots took a 1-0 lead to start game one when senior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) and junior Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) hit back-to-back doubles. The Gusties would take the lead, 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning. Macalester tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the second. Sophomore Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) hit an RBI single to plate fellow sophomore Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Senior Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) then scored on a passed ball. However, Gustavus would pull ahead again, 7-3 in the third. Alexander led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, but in the bottom half of the inning Gustavus would plate two more. The Scots continued to fight back. In the fifth, sophomore Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) walked and stole second before Odom homered to score them both and make it 9-6. Unfortunately, the Scots were held to six runs and fell to the Gusties. Odom was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI's while Alexander was also 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. In game two, the Gusties came out swinging and took a 10-0 lead after four innings. The Scots were able to plate a run in the sixth. Sophomore Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) was able to score on a passed ball. The Gusties were able to plate one more in the sixth and take the game 11-1.
