ST. PAUL, Minn. – Due to Macalester hosting the men's tennis MIAC Playoffs, Macalester baseball hosted Saint John's down the road at Concordia St. Paul this afternoon. After falling 8-6 in game one, the Scots bounced back to take game two, 3-2. Macalester's winning run was a solo home run by senior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) which tied the single season home run record set by
Jesse Calm '02 in 2000. The Scots finish the season 9-29, 3-17 MIAC.
In game one, the Scots went down 3-0 early in the game. However, in the third, Odom blasted the ball out of the park for a three-run homer to tie the game. At the top of the fourth, the Johnnies scored one, and Macalester answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run from junior
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet). Saint John's was able to plate three more runs to lead 7-4, after the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Waddell and sophomore
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) each hit solo home runs to put the Scots within one, 7-6. Unfortunately, the Johnnies plated two more runs and took the game 8-6. Waddell was 3-for-3 with two solo home runs.
In game two, it was the Scots who struck first. First year
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) was able to advance to third off a single from Odom. Then junior
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) sliced an RBI single through the right side to score Peacock. Waddell then plated Odom with an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Odom cracked his 11
th home run of the season, to give Macalester a 3-0 lead. The Johnnies would plate two in the eighth, but the Scots were able to hold them off and win 3-2. Sophomore
Ben King (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) got the win on the mound, pitching seven innings and only allowing three hits. Junior
Jacob Posner (Los Angeles, Calif./Alexander Hamilton) pitched the last 1.2 innings and got the save.
This marks the last competition as a Scot for seniors
Matt Rade (Westborough, Mass./St. John's).,
Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake), and
Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon). The Scots return 34 to field next season.
