ST. PAUL, Minn. – Today, the Macalester baseball team took a break in MIAC action today, hosting the Eagles of Northwestern (MN) in a single nine-inning game. The Scots battled back, forcing extra innings. Sophomore
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) hit a walk-off three-run homer in the 10
th to give the Scots a 9-6 victory. Macalester is now 8-26.
The Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Scots quickly overtook the lead in the third. With a runner on third, senior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) hit an RBI single to score sophomore
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and tie the game. Then, juniors
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and
Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) had back-to-back hits, in which Waddell's double plated Odom. Sophomore
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) had an RBI single to score Wingard and make it 3-1. In the next half inning, the Eagles reclaimed the lead 4-3, but the lead didn't last long. In the bottom of the fifth, Waddell hit an RBI single to bring home Odom and tie the game at 4-4. At the top of the seventh, Northwestern plated two to lead 6-4. Macalester would not go down without a fight, however, getting one back in the next half inning. McCaskey singled and stole second before scoring on an RBI single from Waddell. The Scots tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Wingard hit a sacrifice fly for McCaskey to score on and force extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth, first year
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) singled and Gumagay reached first on an Eagles error. McCaskey once again came up big for the Scots, and blasted a three-run home run into left field, to claim victory, 9-6. Sophomore
Tristan Collins (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) pitched the final five innings, facing 19 batters and striking out five to get the win on the mound. McCaskey was 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI's while Waddell was 4-for-4 with three RBI's.
Macalester's next doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday April 27. The Scots head to St. Peter to face Gustavus in a MIAC contest. First pitch is at 1:00 pm.
