Baseball: Macalester Falters Against St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – Today, the Macalester baseball team traveled up to Duluth for a MIAC doubleheader against St. Scholastica. The Scots pushed it to the last inning of game one, but fell 12-11. Then in game two, the Scots were limited to just four hits and fell 15-1. Macalester is now 7-26 (2-14 MIAC).

Sophomore Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) opened up game one with a double to center field. He then advanced to third on the next play and scored off an RBI single from senior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis). In the next half inning however, the Saints took a 3-1 lead. The Scots reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth.  After back-to-back singles, junior Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) scored off an error by the Saints. Then junior Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) scored off an RBI single from sophomore Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs). McCaskey then stole second and sophomore Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) was walked to load the bases. Jones stepped up and smashed a bases clearing triple to plate Gumagay, McCaskey, and sophomore Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to lead 6-3. The Scots' lead was short lived, with the Saints scoring eight runs in the bottom half of the inning for an 11-6 lead. Macalester came back to tie it in the sixth. Wingard doubled down the left field line to send home Jones. Following that, sophomore Brennan Murley (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) walked and then Alexander doubled down the third base line to score Odom and Wingard. McCaskey then hit a triple to score Murley and Alexander and tie the game up at 11-11. Unfortunately, St. Scholastica was able to get a run at the bottom of the seventh and take the game 12-11. Jones was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI's while Alexander was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI's.

In game two, the Saints limited Macalester's opportunities, taking a 7-0 lead after four innings. Macalester got one run in the fifth. Wingard and Waddell had back-to-back hits to open the inning. Alexander then plated Wingard with an RBI single. However, the Saints were able to plate eight more runs and defeat the Scots 15-1.

Macalester's next game is scheduled for Wednesday April 24. The Scots host Northwestern (MN) in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is at 3:30 pm.
