Baseball: Macalester Beats Crown at Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester baseball team took an early lead against Crown this afternoon and never looked back, as the Scots defeated the Polars 14-9 today. Macalester is now 4-9 for the season.

Macalester opened the scoring in the first inning. Junior Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and sophomore Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) hit back-to-back RBI singles to score junior Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and senior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis). In the second, Macalester increased their lead to 5-0. Sophomore Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) hit an RBI triple to bring home first year Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School). McCaskey then scored off a sacrifice fly from Waddell. Alexander brought home Odom for a second time to round out the second inning with an RBI double. In the third, Macalester continued to build their lead. McCaskey hit an RBI double to hit in senior Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake). Peacock scored on the next batter and McCaskey scored on a sacrifice fly from Odom, giving Macalester an 8-0 lead. After the top of the fifth, the Polars had closed the gap to 8-5. However, the Scots increased their lead again in the bottom half of the inning. Peacock scored off a Polars error after leading off the innings. After back-to-back singles, Alexander doubled to left field to bring home Odom. Then sophomore Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) blasted a 3-run homer to put the Scots up 13-5. By the end of the seventh inning, Crown battled back to 13-9. The Scots added a run in the eighth to top off the scoring and win the game 14-9. First year Isaiah Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Northbrook) earned his first win on the mound, giving up just seven hits in six innings.

The Scots close out their spring trip tomorrow, Saturday March 16, with a double header against Luther. First pitch down in Tucson is set for 11:30 am CDT.
