TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester baseball team rounded out its trip to Arizona with a double header against Luther. The Scots battled hard but fell in both games, 9-3 and 11-5. Macalester is now 4-11.
After giving up three runs at the top of the first in game one, the Scots fought back to tie up the game in the bottom half of the inning. Junior
Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) smashed a two-RBI single to bring home sophomores
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) and
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Then sophomore
Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) had an RBI single to plate senior
Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) for the tying run. However, the Norse were able to pull away and score six more runs to take the game 9-3. Odom was 1-for-2 with a run.
In game two, the Scots got out to an early lead in the first. Sophomore
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) hit an RBI single to bring home Alexander. Immediately afterwards, fellow sophomore
Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) hit an RBI double to send home Wingard and Planko. In the second, Wingard singled out to center field to bring home first year
Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) for a 4-0 lead. However, between the next two innings, the Norse was able to pull ahead 5-4. Macalester put up the tying run in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from senior
Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) to score McCaskey. Yet, the Norse were able to pull back ahead and win the game 11-5. Wingard was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Gumagay was 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
Macalester's next game is scheduled for Wednesday March 20. The Scots play its first game at home, hosting Northwestern (MN) at Nicholson Field at 3:00 p.m.
