LAKELAND, Fla. – The Macalester College men's tennis team won its first game down in Florida today. The Scots took down the Hawks of Roger Williams University, 7-2. The Scots improve to 3-6.
Macalester earned the points at second and third doubles. Juniors
Lucas Wood (Urbana, Ill./University Lab School) and
Jordan Doi (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) earned the hard-fought point at second doubles, 8-6. At third doubles, first year
Kevin Mortimer and junior
Owen Lindstrom (Hanover, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) eased to an 8-3 victory. The Hawks won the point at first doubles.
Doi cruised to an easy victory at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0. Slated at No. 1 singles, junior
Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) won the first set 7-6 (9-6 tiebreaker). He then won the second set 6-2, to secure the point for Macalester. Wood won at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-3. At fifth singles, senior
Lewis Jolly (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) won in two sets (6-2, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker)). Mortimer took down his opponent at sixth singles in three sets. He won the first 6-1, before falling 7-6 (10-8 tiebreaker) in the second. Mortimer won the third set 10-7. The Hawks won the point at third singles.
Macalester's next match will be Thursday March 14. The Scots close out their Florida trip with a match against Western Connecticut State at 8:00 am CDT in Orlando.
