Baseball: Scots Complete Comeback to Defeat Crown

TUCSON, Ariz. – After a slow start, the Macalester baseball team made a comeback to defeat Crown College, 9-5. The Scots pick up their first win down in Tucson, and are now 2-8 on the season.

Crown got off to an early 3-0 lead in the first. At the top of the third, junior junior Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) hit an RBI single down the right field line, bringing home sophomore Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) and getting the Scots on the board. However, in the bottom of the inning and the bottom of the fourth, Crown increased their lead to 5-1. However, the Scots continued to battle. In the sixth, junior Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) smashed a ground-rule double into the outfield. His hit scored seniors Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) and Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis), closing the gap to 5-3. Then in the eighth, it was Wingard again, this time with a three-run homer, giving the Scots the go-ahead run. Macalester put up one more run in the inning, with sophomore Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) scoring off an RBI single from fellow sophomore Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton). In the ninth, the Scots built upon their lead. Odom hit an RBI triple to score Waddell and Mukai hit a sacrifice fly to bring in sophomore Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) and take the game 9-5. Sophomore pitcher Tristan Collins (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) pitched four perfect innings to hold off the Polars and help the Scots secure the win.

The Scots play two games on Thursday March 14. Macalester will play Edgewood at 11:30 am CDT and then Augsburg in a non-conference game at 3:00 pm CDT down in Tucson.
