Baseball: Macalester’s Offense Shines in Game 1, as Scots Split Two in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – Macalester baseball's bats were hot today, as the Scots mercy-ruled Edgewood 19-9 in seven innings to begin the day. Afterwards, Macalester played Augsburg in a non-conference game. The Scots' comeback was stopped short, and they fell 9-7 to the Auggies, splitting their games today. Macalester is now 3-9.
 
Macalester came out swinging this morning, putting up 11 runs in the first inning against Edgewood. Sophomore Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) put the Scots on the board after scoring on a fielder's choice. Then fellow sophomore Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) had a two RBI single, bringing home junior Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and senior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis). Sophomore Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and senior Charlie Burton (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring in junior Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Alexander. Macalester continued its offensive prowess with an RBI double from sophomore Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) to bring in Paulsen. McCaskey was able to score on an error by the Eagles. Odom then hit an RBI single to bring home first year Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School). Alexander tacked on another RBI double, plating Odom while Paulsen had an RBI single to send home Wingard and lead 11-0 after the first.
 
The Eagles got two back, but the Scots increased their lead in the bottom of the third. Alexander hit an RBI-single, McCaskey smashed a two-RBI double, and Peacock hit an RBI-single to increase Macalester's lead to 16-2. Edgewood would battle back to 16-8 at the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Brennan Murley (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) hit an RBI single to bring in junior Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley). The Eagles put up another run at the top of the seventh to make it 17-9. However, first year Braden LaChapelle (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) had an RBI single to plate McCaskey, making it 18-9. Immediately following, Murakami hit an RBI double to send home Peacock, and take the game 19-9. Alexander went 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBI's while Wingard went 3-for-3 with three runs.
 
In game two, Macalester took the lead early, as Wingard scored in the second inning. However, the Auggies would take the lead 8-1 through the fifth. Macalester started its comeback in the sixth. Gumagay tripled to the outfield to bring home sophomore Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy). Waddell cracked an RBI double and Odom had an RBI single to cut Augsburg's lead to 8-4. The Auggies put up one more run in the sixth. In the seventh, sophomore Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) hit an RBI double to send in fellow sophomore Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian). In the eighth, Wingard and Alexander had RBI singles, but the Scots' comeback was cut short and Macalester fell 9-7. Waddell was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Wingard was 2-for4 with one run and one RBI.
 
Macalester's next game will be Friday March 15. The Scots play Crown at 3:00 pm CDT in Tucson, Ariz.
