Baseball: Macalester Drops Two in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester baseball team competed in two games today, as the Scots continue play down in Tucson. The Scots fought against both Carthage and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, but ultimately fell 5-2 and 14-0 respectively to the two teams. Macalester is now 1-8.

The Scots started the day facing off against the Carthage Firebirds. Macalester went down 2-0 early in the first two innings. The Firebirds were able to tack on three more runs to go up, 5-0 after the sixth. In the seventh, sophomore Evan Kang (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Village Christian) singled to get on base. Then junior Hayes Waddell (North Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) smashed one out of the park to cut Carthage's lead to 5-2. However, the Scots were unable to complete the comeback and fell 5-2. Waddell was 1-for-2 with two RBI's and a run while senior Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) and sophomore Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) went 2-for-4.

In the second game of the day, Macalester took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The Stags struck early and were able to put up 14 runs this afternoon, to defeat Macalester 14-0. In the first, sophomore Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) stole second with two outs, but the next batter popped up to third base. In the second, junior Jake Murakami (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and sophomore Tommy Ball (Wayne, Pa./The Shipley School) hit back-to-back singles, but Macalester's next two batters struck out. Murakami was 2-for-3.
